Sketchbooks

A massive part of my creative process when painting my semi abstract coastal art is compiling sketches from photos of places that inspire me.

I've been doing this for a while, I've shared a few images on my Instagram and Pinterest; but thought it would be good to dedicate this page to some of my favourites.

In these sketchbooks I use mixed media to provide different textures and looks; I usually start off with Gouache and then layer on pastels, pencils or crayons (like Caran D'ache Neocolour 2 which are a firm favourite).

Aldeburgh from the Slaughden end of the beach

Aldeburgh lifeboat museum and houses on the seafront

Aldeburgh lookouts on the seafront

See how the sketches turn into original paintings and prints.

The sketch is just the jumping off point, from there I take insipration from the colours, shapes and theme and turn it into something a bit different.
